COLORADO SPRINGS — Tiger cub Zoya has some company.

The 7-month-old female Amur tiger has lived at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs since she was born in June.

Three weeks ago, 8-month-old Billy Ray arrived from the Pittsburgh Zoo. Billy Ray — nicknamed “Grom,” from the word for “thunder” in many Slavic languages — and Zoya made their debut together in the Asian Highlands habitat Thursday, where they will live with Zoya’s parents.

Zoya weighs 90 pounds, while Grom is a much heavier 133 pounds.

Amur tigers (formerly called Siberian) are the world’s largest cats — males can be more than 500 pounds when they are fully grown. They are an endangered species, with about 400 animals in the wild.

Zoya was 2.6 pounds when she was born to mother Helga and father George. Her name means “life” in Greek.
