DENVER—Authorities say illegal trash burning is what likely caused two dozen students at the Denver School of Science and Technology to have trouble breathing, prompting officials to evacuate the school.

Denver fire spokesman Lt. Phil Champagne says 24 students were taken to a hospital for observation Thursday after they complained of shortness of breath.

He says the 520 students at the school were then evacuated as a precaution.

Champagne says authorities believe the problems were caused by fumes that drifted to the school from a nearby backyard, where someone was illegally burning trash.

He says hazardous-materials experts responded and did tests at the school but discovered no harmful gases.
