GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Grand Junction is seeing a small increase in consumer spending despite the harsh economy.
City Financial Operation Manager Jodi Romero says the city collected $58.7 million in revenue from sales and use taxes in 2008, compared with $54.5 million in 2007.
Sales-tax revenue collected at the end of 2008 was also slightly up from 2007. Officials say they received $11.54 million from retailers in October, November, and December.
The city collected $11.41 million during those months in 2007.
The city did see a 7 percent decline in building material sales, and another 20 percent decline at drug stores.
City officials are still taking precautionary measures. Most of new spending has been put on hold for the first quarter of 2009.
