GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Investigators say alcohol and texting are suspected as factors in a crash on Interstate 70 that killed a Grand Junction woman.
Eighteen-year-old Samantha Ann Loy died about 1:30 a.m. Sunday when the car she was driving went out of control on eastbound I-70 and rolled into westbound traffic. Loy was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected.
Fruita police Chief Mark Angelo says Officer Nick Peck had stopped Loy about a half-hour prior to the crash for two minor traffic violations, but did not notice any alcohol or drug impairment.
The Colorado State Patrol says alcohol was considered a factor in the crash, and says she was likely using her cell phone to send text messages at the time.
A Glenwood Springs man died in an accident later Sunday on Colorado 133.
