DALLAS — Two former Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a fleeing drug smuggler and trying to cover it up were released from prison Tuesday, about a month after former President George W. Bush commuted their prison sentences.

Ignacio Ramos, 40, and Jose Compean, 32, had each served two years of their more than 10-year sentences. Their sentences become officially commuted March 20.

Until then, the men will be in home confinement, their attorneys said. Both then will be on supervised release for up to three years.

Ramos and Compean were convicted in 2006 of shooting Osvaldo Aldrete Davila near El Paso on the border with Mexico. Prosecutors said the former agents fired 15 shots at Aldrete, hitting him once in the buttocks. Investigators said the agents never reported the shooting and tried to cover it up.
