Denver Post staff writer Jon E. Yunt takes a look ahead at the action in high school sports:
BOYS BASKETBALL
Presidential performances
With this week including Presidents Day and a visit to Denver from the commander in chief, it got us to thinking. So here we go, starting with Abraham Lincoln. The Lancers close the regular season Friday night against an improving East squad. How about Thomas Jefferson? The Spartans can earn the top spot in Class 4A’s DPL with a win at home over West and a North loss to Montbello. If North wins, the Vikings, by virtue of a two-point victory over TJ, earn league honors.
Meet another Andrew Jackson
Keeping with the presidential theme, Highland’s second-leading scorer shares his name with our seventh president. Having completed Patriot League play Tuesday against Erie, Andrew Jackson and the Huskies finished 3-8 in league games and will miss the Class 3A postseason.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
More presidential talk
The jump from Class 3A to 4A doesn’t seem to have affected Roosevelt. The RoughRiders, led by Sendy Valles, dropped their season opener to Broomfield by 34 points. On Saturday, they will get a chance at the Eagles again in the championship game of the Northern Conference Tournament at Northern Colorado’s Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion.
STATE GOINGS ON
Hockey and skiing
The state hockey tournament gets underway Friday at four sites — Englewood’s Family Sports Center, Colorado Springs’ Sertich Arena, Aspen’s Lewis Arena and Arvada’s APEX. Defending champion Regis is the top seed and Foothills League rival Ralston Valley is No. 2. The state skiing meets start today, hosted by Lake County High School in Leadville. The nordic events will be held at Colorado Mountain College and the alpine events at Ski Cooper.
