Metal missing from a jail-cell door sparked a shakedown of the Denver County Jail that resulted in a homemade knife being discovered in the cell of alleged killer Willie Clark, a deputy sheriff testified Tuesday.
Clark, 26, is accused of possession of contraband, specifically a homemade knife or shank, which is a Class 4 felony that carries a sentence of up to 12 years.
Clark is accused of killing Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams on Jan. 1, 2007, and is charged in the December 2006 murder of Kalonniann Clark.
During Tuesday’s preliminary hearing in Denver County Court, sheriff’s deputy Andrew Sipres testified the initial search was not focused on Clark, who had just transferred to the jail from a federal facility.
Instead, Sipres said, the search began about 12:30 p.m. Dec. 8 after metal from the door on cell 2-A-2 was discovered missing. Sipres said Clark was being held in isolation in cell 2-B-4, which is not close to the other cell.
