BOYS BASKETBALL

Fire up the buses

The best part about this time of year, other than the quality basketball that is upon us, is a plethora of matchups that are simply too good not to mention.

Starting in today’s Class 5A bracket, in the Glenn Wilson Region, two games in particular cry out for attention. Poudre (minus standout Dallas Elmore) travels to the southern end of Colorado Springs to battle Class 5A newbie Fountain-Fort Carson. The C.S. Metro’s other 5A newcomer, Liberty, will take its potent offense to Montbello to battle the Warriors. Some other intriguing games: Northglenn at Central (G.J.), Palmer at Thornton, Sand Creek at Grandview and Mullen at Abraham Lincoln.

Class 4A’s second round on tap

Kudos to John F. Kennedy, which, according to coach Harry Moseley, won its first playoff game in “who knows how long?” The reward for the Commanders is a date with fellow presidential namesake and first-year 4A program Roosevelt. The RoughRiders, featuring Sendy Valles, haven’t skipped a beat in moving up from Class 3A and are 19-4.

Pueblo County survived a scare from Delta in the first round, winning 61-60 in double overtime, and will travel north to Longmont to take on the Trojans on Friday night.

Top-seeded Broomfield, 23-0 in the regular season, will start its defending title run Friday night against Castle View. The Sabercats (10-13), seeded No. 9 in the Tanya Haave Region, were the only higher seed to win in Tuesday’s opening round of the tournament, dropping No. 8 Jefferson 77-46.
