COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Colorado Springs School District 11 officials have decided to close seven of their 41 elementary schools and one of their nine middle schools as part of a realignment process.

The District 11 board voted on the closures Wednesday night.

Board members also decided to move one elementary school program but delayed a decision on whether to convert one of their five high schools into a smaller magnet school for arts, science and math.

District 11 has about 30,000 students.

The board also voted to hire Nicholas Gledich as superintendent. He is currently chief operations officer of the Orange County Public Schools in Orlando, Fla.
