NEW YORK — Jeans weren’t forgotten among all the dressy sportswear and evening clothes shown during the recent round of Fashion Week presentations for next fall.
Baggy styles in dark indigo denim, skintight, bleached out five-pocked designs and styles decorated with studs, fringe, patches and holes were among the looks in collections for men and women from Miss Sixty, Diesel Black Gold, G-Star and William Rast.
At Miss Sixty, denim was acid-washed and overprinted — homage to the 1980s. The line included jumpsuits, dresses and low-slung jeans in blue or black, shown with layers of printed tops, jackets and scarves.
G-Star went the dark-denim route, presenting men’s jeans with military-inspired flaps, snaps and zippers. The women’s styles fit at the waist and were baggy, looking like they could have been borrowed from the boys.
The design team at William Rast, Justin Timberlake’s brand, showed ripped, torn and patched pants. Jackets and jeans were embellished with rows of studs, references to Timberlake’s Tennessee roots.
Diesel Black Gold also showed beat-up blue jeans, a metaphor for the times, it seems.
If $150 or more is too much to spare for a pair of designer denims, it may be time to scour thrift shops for vintage designs — or maybe bury a pair in the backyard for a few months, so they get the grungy look that’s come back in vogue.
