University of Colorado junior Jenny Barringer has been to the Olympics and set a host of records, but she did something Saturday she hadn’t done before: beat Texas Tech’s Sally Kipyego. Barringer won the mile in 4 minutes, 25.91 seconds at the Big 12 indoor track and field championships in College Station, Texas, the fastest indoor time in the world this season.
The time was a collegiate, conference, stadium and school record. “A Big 12 title is such a big deal to me,” Barringer said. “I think it is such a tribute to the Big 12 that I am an Olympian and I only have two titles. ”
Jeremy Dodson had CU’s best men’s finish with a second in the 200 meters.
Host Texas A&M won the women’s title with 130 points. CU was last with 11. Texas won the men’s title with 115 points. The Buffs men also were last at 16 points.
BYU wins MWC track.
Brigham Young swept the men’s and women’s team titles at the Mountain West Conference indoor track and field championships, which concluded Saturday at the Air Force Academy.
The Cougars’ men and women each scored 224 points.
Texas Christian’s women were second with 117 points, followed by Colorado State (61). Air Force was seventh (36) and Wyoming ninth (26). Air Force’s men were third with 91 points, followed by Colorado State (85). Wyoming finished sixth (77).
Ryan Friese was the lone Colorado State athlete to win an individual title, with the junior taking the 800- meter run in a personal-best time of 1:51.17, a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA championships.
Grizzlies rule RMAC again.
For the fifth time in the last six years, Adams State’s powerhouse men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams swept the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference team titles.
It was the eighth consecutive RMAC crown for the Grizzlies’ women, matching their record run from 1993 to 2000. The Grizzlies’ men finished second last season.
