Though March is statistically Denver’s snowiest month, it may be at least a week or more before it lives up to that reputation.
A dry La Niña helped keep moisture to a minimum in February, and this week’s forecast calls for above-average highs in the low 70s on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service office in Boulder.
Meteorologist Kyle Fredin said the next snow may not fall for another eight to 12 days.
“We’re pretty dry and low on snow right now,” he said. “You might look for a chance of increased precipitation by the end of (the) week.”
Fredin said there is a strong possibility for stormier conditions as the month moves along. Storms tend to be warmer as spring approaches, and warmer air holds more moisture. That typically means rain for May, but snow in March and into April.
“You can already start to feel that spring’s on its way,” Fredin said. “Statistically, you can almost bet that the latter part of this month will be wetter than the first part.”
