The Denver Post won three large- newspaper sweepstakes awards and its reporters, editors and photographers took home 26 first-place prizes as two state journalism organizations announced their winners Friday and Saturday.

In the Colorado Press Association journalism contest, The Post won the sweepstakes categories for Photo and Design and Editorial, as well as for General Excellence.

Over the two nights, journalists from the Rocky Mountain News won 22 first-place prizes. The News won the CPA’s Best of Show award in deadline reporting and, on Friday, the Colorado Associated Press general excellence award for large papers.

In the CPA contest, the following Post journalists received first prizes:

• Editorial staff for Best Editorial Writing

• Brian Schoeni for Best Headline Writing

• News Staff for Best Sustained Coverage

• Photo Staff for Best Photo Essay

• Andrew Lucas for Best Informational Graphic

• Editorial staff for Best Editorial Layout & Design

• Jim Carr for Best Feature Page

• Lori Punko for Best News Page

• Bill Porter for Best Serious Column

• Nancy Lofholm for Best Education Story

• Bill Porter for Best Humorous Column

• Michael Riley for Public Service

• The news staff for Best Special Section

• Mark Kiszla for Sports column

• Benjamin Hochman for Sports Event

• Terry Frei for Sports Story

In the Colorado Associated Press awards competition, Craig F. Walker won Best of Show for a Valentine’s Day photo, and the following Denver Post journalists won first-place prizes:

• Alicia Caldwell for Editorial Writing

• Craig F. Walker for Feature Photo

• Brian Schoeni for Headline Writing

• Barry Osborne for Informational Graphic

• Staff for Online Special Package

• Cyrus McCrimmon for Photo Illustration
