DENVER—Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper says charging a toll on the road leading to the Denver airport is unworkable.
Hickenlooper said Tuesday he floated the idea months ago as a way to help the Regional Transportation District pay for an ambitious commuter-rail expansion.
He now says the idea isn’t viable, partly because the road was built with federal money, which means most toll money would go to the federal government.
Mayors in the northern Denver suburbs touted the idea earlier this week.
RTD’s rail project, called FasTracks, is facing a $2.2 billion budget gap.
