Former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb will resign as president and chief executive of the Colorado Black Chamber of Commerce, effective March 31.
Webb said his departure will make room for a full-time CEO and let him focus more on his business-consulting firm, Webb Group International.
Webb said he accepted the position in 2006 on a temporary basis. He ended up staying three years.
“The chamber needs a full-time president. We have five outstanding candidates,” said Webb, who will stay on as chairman.
The chamber under Webb’s watch took a more active role in public advocacy, including opposition to ballot measures favoring right-to-work and seeking to abolish affirmative action. It created a leadership-training program, published a walking-tour guide of African-American sites and a historical calendar and revived the city’s Juneteenth celebration. The chamber has more than 600 members, Webb said.
