STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo.—Nature lovers and anglers soon will have better access to a lake in the Chuck Lewis State Wildlife Area south of Steamboat Springs.
Construction crews used a trackhoe and crane Thursday to lift into place a 120-foot steel pedestrian bridge spanning the Yampa River.
The bridge links a parking lot off Routt County Road 14 with the 50-acre lake. Officials say the walkway could be open to the public by late May or early June.
Previously, the only way to legally access the lake was by wading or kayaking across the river.
Billy Atkinson, a fisheries biologist with the Colorado Division of Wildlife, says the lake contains “quite a few pike” and a few trout. The division is funding the bridge project.
