The headlines of Jan. 26 were bleak: 74,100 Americans were pink-slipped. It was enough to spur the imagination of Denver artist Ron Mays, 51.

With a gallon of pink paint from Home Depot, Mays set out cutting dollar-sized strips of newspapers — 74,100 of them in deference to the newly unemployed, clipped from The Denver Post, Rocky Mountain News, Aurora Sentinel and Westword — then assembled them onto a 64-inch by 91-inch constructivist acrylic and newsprint painting he calls simply “Pink Slips.” The project wasn’t finished until Feb. 27, when the News’ closing was announced. A day later, Mays stripped portions of that last newspaper into the artwork.
