CORTEZ, Colo.—A driver who had a seizure before crashing into a motorcycle and killing the two people on it was sentenced to probation and community service.

Megan Coxwell told a Montezuma County District judge she never wants to drive again and that she prays for the families of the victims, Dale and Karen Gish. Dale was 44 and Karen 60.

Coxwell, 33, faced charges of criminal-negligent homicide and careless driving causing death for the July 1, 2007 accident near Dolores.

“I can’t explain the pain I’m feeling, and I do feel your pain,” Coxwell told the victim’s relatives during her sentencing hearing Thursday.

Coxwell was sentenced to three years probation and 100 hours of community service.

The relatives of the victims told District Judge Douglas Walker they wanted Coxwell to serve her community service at organizations like Habitat for Humanity and area nursing homes, places that were important Dale and Karen Gish.

Deputy District Attorney Russ Wasley said Coxwell had a history of not taking her medication and that she was switching prescriptions before the crash.

“She was taking a chance, and we believe she drove knowing that chance,” Wasley said during the hearing.
