OMAHA—A senior University of Nebraska Medical Center official says the lifting of a ban on using federal dollars for embryonic stem cell research marks a “big day for science.” Dave Crouse, associate vice chancellor of academic affairs, said at a Monday news conference that some 400 additional cell lines have been developed without federal dollars since the ban went into effect in August 2001. LINCOLN—Emotions ran high as Nebraska lawmakers debated a measure meant to help fix problems highlighted by public use of the state’s old safe-haven law last year. During floor debate on the bill (LB356) Monday, state Sen. Tom White of Omaha said the state failed miserably last year and nothing is being done this year. Thirty-six children were dropped off at hospitals before lawmakers changed the safe-haven law so that it only applied to infants. By Nate Jenkins.
