DAKAR, Senegal — The Sudanese government released one of its most vociferous critics Monday, a possible attempt to shore up domestic support now that the nation’s president is wanted internationally on war-crimes charges.
The government offered no explanation for its decision to free the opposition critic, Hassan al-Turabi, an Islamist leader, only two months after his arrest.
Al-Turabi led the country’s hard-line government for years alongside the president, Omar Hassan al-Bashir, but later broke with his protege.
Analysts said Turabi’s release was probably aimed at resolving some of the nation’s internal political divisions given the threat of arrest facing Bashir.
