The $42.4 million in grants awarded to the University of Colorado-Denver’s pediatrics department in 2007-08 was the highest of any pediatrics department in the nation.

The sum of grants from the National Institutes of Health ranked the School of Medicine’s pediatrics department — whose doctors practice at Children’s Hospital — No. 1 out of 90 U.S. medical schools.

The money supported research in childhood cancer, diabetes, lung diseases, liver disease and heart disease.

The high level of funding “demonstrates that we have some of the best pediatric scientists in the world,” said Stephen Daniels, department chair.
