Will Shafroth, the founding director of the Colorado Conservation Trust and Great Outdoors Colorado Trust Fund, has been named deputy assistant secretary for fish, wildlife and parks by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.

Shafroth, an unsuccessful congressional candidate in the last Democratic primary, was a founder and executive director of the nonprofit Colorado Conservation Trust, which raised $18 million in private contributions and spurred $35 million in investments in conservation projects.

Salazar, who founded GOCO, which used lottery revenues to promote state and local open-space projects, said he would like to develop a similar national program.

“Will and I have worked together on natural-resource conservation issues for more than 15 years,” Salazar said in a statement, adding that Shafroth “will provide invaluable leadership on land and wildlife conservation initiatives.”
