WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says a career military officer who once was the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan is his choice to be the next ambassador to the war-torn country.

Lt. Gen. Karl W. Eikenberry served in Afghanistan twice, including an 18-month tour that ended in 2007. He knows well the issues facing the troubled country and the players.

Eikenberry has warned repeatedly that the U.S. cannot win in Afghanistan and defeat global terrorism without doing something about al-Qaeda fighters holed up in neighboring Pakistan.

Obama also announced Wednesday that Ivo Daalder is his pick to be the U.S. ambassador to NATO.
