COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to four years in prison for causing the death of a campus police officer from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

Mark Vigil pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of vehicular homicide in an agreement with prosecutors and was taken into custody immediately after sentencing. The district attorney’s office dropped a charge of leaving the scene of a crash causing serious injury or death.

Vigil was accused of driving a car that struck a motorcycle from behind at a stop sign in Security last October. The Colorado State Patrol says the impact hurled the motorcycle 60 feet.

Fifty-two-year-old Craig Highline was wearing a helmet, but died from his injuries.

He was an eight-year veteran of the UCCS police force.
