• A headline on a story on Wednesday’s Page 1A about a new system that will allow local law enforcement to inquire about the immigration status of a person being arrested inaccurately described the role police play in the immigration process. Police notify Immigration and Customs Enforcement when a suspected illegal immigrant is detained. But local and state law enforcement officers have nothing to do with whether that person is more fully investigated or ultimately deported, and the new system from ICE will not change that.
