PUEBLO, Colo.—Austin Tharp scored 13 points as top-seeded Holyoke upended Ignacio 45-33 to claim a boys’ 2A semifinal victory Friday night.

Holyoke held Ignacio to 15 points in the second half.

Veteran Holyoke coach John Baumgartner says his team’s defense was “definitely the key.”

He says the Dragons don’t play much zone, but they played zone in the second half of the game. And he says they were able to shut down Ignacio’s “big guy,” Alex Herrera.

The 6-foot-7 Herrera had 15 points, but only four in the second half.

Tharp, who made 11-of-14 free throws, says a lot of people doubted Holyoke, so the team went to the state tournament “with a vengeance.”

The Dragons won the Class 2A state title in 1984.
