WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama dug in his heels Friday in support of Christopher Hill as the nation’s top diplomat in Iraq, as Republican support for the nomination crumbled.

Republicans say Hill lacks experience in the Middle East and bungled talks with North Korea. Four GOP senators — Sam Brownback of Kansas, John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and John Ensign of Nevada — said Obama should reconsider.

When asked to respond, Obama’s chief spokesman didn’t flinch. “The president believes he’s got the right man for the job,” said White House press secretary Robert Gibbs.
