Skies grew dimmer across most of the globe over the past three decades as air pollution worsened, a new study shows.

Researchers who compiled data from 3,250 meteorological stations around the world from 1973 to 2007 discovered the globe had gotten hazier, according to the study to be published in today’s edition of the journal Science.

Visibility is reduced by aerosols, or solid particles and liquid droplets in the air. These particles, from soot, dust and sulfur dioxide, create air pollution. The largest decline in visibility occurred over south and east Asia, Africa, Australia and South America. Visibility improved over Europe.
