Tyler Ruegsegger, the University of Denver’s leading goalscorer, will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, the team announced Saturday.
The junior center from Lakewood was injured in Friday’s 3-2 comeback victory over Alaska-Anchorage. Ruegsegger, who has a team-best 15 goals — including 12 on the power play — was the star of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoff opener, scoring consecutive goals within 1:58 of the second period to tie it 2-2.
He was injured in the third period, sustaining a partial tear to a knee ligament.
“I feel bad for Tyler. Hate to see anybody get injured,” DU assistant coach Steve Miller said before Saturday’s Game 2 of the best-of-three series at Magness Arena. “It’s part of the adversity that you have to deal with during the season. I know the rest of the team is looking forward to facing that challenge.”
The Pioneers are now without their top two centers. Tyler Bozak, who underwent knee surgery Dec. 19, has missed the past 18 games. Bozak is scheduled to return March 27 or March 28 for DU’s NCAA Tournament first-round regional game.
