GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A woman and her son who fell some 20 feet into a crevice at Colorado National Monument Saturday survived the fall with only minor injuries.

The Grand Junction Fire Department says the fall happened when the son tossed his jacket across the 18-inch-wide crevice during an afternoon hike.

The son then jumped across to retrieve it but started slipping. The mother went to help the son, and both fell down the crevice. Another friend witnessed the fall.

Authorities say the mother was hospitalized with minor injuries, while the boy was only bruised. Neither was named by authorities.
