FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A wolf sanctuary has until Friday to tear down fences for four new animal enclosures or face a hearing that could close it down.

Officials for Wolves Offered Life and Friendship built the 2-acre enclosures in anticipation of expanding the sanctuary in Rist Canyon, which is about 20 miles northwest of Fort Collins.

Rob Helmick of the Larimer County planning department told the Coloradoan that building permits are needed because the permanent fencing is more than 6-feet high and sits outside of the sanctuary’s 5-acre permit area.

Frank Wendland, co-founder of the nonprofit, said the facility doesn’t need permits for the fences because of the land’s agricultural use. Wendland said the enclosures took 18-months to build.
