BROKEN BOW, Neb.—The U.S. Department of Defense says remains of a Nebraska serviceman who went missing during the Korean War have been identified.
Remains of Sgt. 1st Class Patrick J. Arthur of Broken Bow will be buried May 1 in Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C.
In May 1951, the Defense Department says, members of his Army division were securing positions south of the Soyang River in South Korea when the Chinese launched a major counteroffensive.
Arthur was captured and taken to North Korea. He died of malnutrition and disease in July 1951 and was buried at near Pyongyang.
Scientists used DNA evidence and dental records to identify some of Arthur’s remains among boxes North Korea gave to the United States in the early 1990s.
