Every Coloradan knows a balmy mid-March day is something to be treasured — as long as you don’t spend too much time considering how dusty it is outside.

So as those on the Front Range prepare for a day with highs in the low 70s, here’s just how miserable it could be:

• Between March 12 and 16, 1880, eight low-temperature records were set. The mercury dipped to minus 10.

• In March 1906, Denver was cold and blustery for 11 days, with a high at the freezing mark.

• On March 16, 1983, Denver was hit with 10 inches of snow and Boulder with 18 inches.

• And on March 18-19, 2003, the Front Range was crippled by a storm that left nearly 3 feet of snow in some areas.

As for 2009, National Weather Service forecasters are calling for a brief cool-down Wednesday with a high of 59.

The high Thursday will be 66, and then Denver will be back in the 70s on Friday and Saturday.
