DENVER—Xcel Energy has proposed rate changes that would increase monthly electricity bills for residential and small-business customers by about 2.6 percent beginning April 1.
The Colorado Public Utilities Commission must approve the changes.
Xcel says it’s seeking the rate hike because of a $61.5 million change in its deferred balance from last quarter. The company says forecast fuel and purchased energy prices have dropped by about 44 percent.
If the PUC approves the changes, the typical residential customer’s bill would increase by $1.43 a month to $56.23. Bills for typical small-business customers would increase by $2.33 a month to $89.91.
The company says costs associated with increases or decreases in fuel and purchased energy costs generally are passed along to its Colorado customers on a dollar-per-dollar basis.
