DENVER—MCA Denver is laying off five people, including its deputy director, as the contemporary art museum slashes its 2009 budget by about 17 percent.

The museum will be left with 15 full-time and nine part-time employees.

The museum says it’s trying to ensure its financial stability in the current economic climate. The current budget of $2.1 million is down from $2.5 million in 2008.

MCA Denver says Deputy Director John Grant will leave at the end of March but will be available on contract for special and curatorial projects. Director Adam Lerner, whose first day was Monday, will work with the board on a final budget and organizational review.

The museum says employees who are laid off will receive severance packages.
