High pressure will keep the temperatures up across Colorado into the weekend, the National Weather Service said tonight.

The high in Denver was 68 degrees Tuesday. Temperatures will be around 60 Wednesday, but an approaching cold front could bring afternoon showers over the mountains and produce thunderstorms on the Eastern Plains, forecasters said.

Temperatures in the metro region could press into the 70s for the weekend, according to the forecast. The average high temperature for March in Denver is 50 degrees.

In the absence of moisture, the fire danger remains high across most of the state. This March is turning into one of the driest on record in Colorado, according to the National Weather Service.

Most of the metro region has seen less than an inch of moisture in March, historically Denver’s snowiest month with an average of nearly 13 inches.

The warm weather is affecting the mountains as well.

Ski resorts from Aspen to Steamboat will see highs in the 50s through Sunday, according to the forecast.

The state’s snowpack, which was at more than 120 percent of Colorado’s 30-year average in January, has slipped to 101 percent statewide, and 88 percent of average in the South Platte River basin, which includes Denver.
