COSTA MESA, Calif. — Amid an escalating backlash over AIG executives’ bonuses, President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he would accept blame, though he also made clear the multimillion-dollar payouts weren’t his idea.
Obama said at a town-hall event that the bonuses have spawned a familiar bout of finger-pointing. “So for everyone in Washington who is busy scrambling trying to figure out how to blame somebody else, just go ahead and talk to me,” he said. “Because it’s my job to make sure that we fix these messes, even if I don’t make them.” He added: “I’ll take responsibility; I’m the president.” Chicago Tribune
