Denver Post staff writer Jon E. Yunt looks ahead at this weekend’s action in high school sports:

BASEBALL

Steel City classic

It’s a mid-March staple in Pueblo. The Hobbs Baseball Bash brings together some of Southern Colorado’s finest for a three-day . . . well, bash. Pueblo’s powerhouse, South’s Colts, will be there as well as East, Centennial, County and Central. Lamar and La Junta make the trip west, and Class 2A’s reigning champion and preseason No. 1, Custer County, will compete too.

BOYS LACROSSE

LAX from west of the Divide

It wasn’t all that long ago that the state’s fastest-growing game was relegated to a select few along the Front Range. Grand Junction, which will play host to the Border Wars (an annual competition between Colorado and Utah teams) this month, has to take care of early business in the newly formed Mountain League against Durango. The Tigers will play Durango on Friday (4 p.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m.) at Canyon View Park.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Mighty mite hits Cali

Allie McLaughlin earned her fame running cross country this past fall for Air Academy, but the 4-foot-11, 95-pounder is one heck of lacrosse player too. McLaughlin and her Kadets teammates are in San Diego for some spring break fun in the sun — and a little work. On Saturday they will play Foothill High from Santa Ana, Calif., and Monday will play La Costa Canyon.

TRACK AND FIELD

Lace’em up

There are a bunch of prequalifying meets Saturday. The highlight of the weekend will be the Aurora City Championships, being hosted by Regis. Also on the docket are: Pueblo’s Centennial Invitational, Frederick’s Pow-Wow, the Harrison Panther Invite and Grand Junction’s Mickey Dunn Invitational at Stocker Stadium.
