In anticipation of their Major League Soccer home opener against Kansas City, the Rapids on Wednesday waived midfielder John DiRaimondo and signed defender Michael Holody to a developmental contract.
Holody was a Rapids fourth-round draft pick, 59th overall, before this season. He holds the University of Michigan record for minutes played in a standout collegiate career.
DiRaimondo played in 11 games — eight starts — for Colorado. The Rapids host the Wizards on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
NLL salutes Mammoth rookie.
The National Lacrosse League named Colorado Mammoth forward Tyler Crompton its rookie of the week after he scored three goals in a 13-11 win over Minnesota on Sunday.
Metro State in softball top 10.
The Metro State softball team moved up to No. 8 from No. 14 in this week’s National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II poll. Metro State totaled 270 points in the poll. Angelo (Texas) State is No. 1 with 396 points.
The Roadrunners (25-5, 18-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) had their 13-game winning streak end in Game 2 of Wednesday’s doubleheader with Regis, losing 3-2 in nine innings. Metro State won the opener 10-0 in five innings.
UNC beats Nebraska in baseball.
Jarod Berggren went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Northern Colorado pounced on Nebraska (15-8-1) pitching for 14 hits in a 10-7 victory for the Bears on Wednesday.
The Bears (8-15) rallied from a 5-3 deficit to split the two-game series in Lincoln, Neb.
Rage loses Game 2 of CHL playoff series.
Playing on the road, the Rocky Mountain Rage blew a two-goal lead in the third period and lost 5-4 in overtime to the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs, who tied the best-of- three Central Hockey League playoff series 1-1.
David Pszenyczny scored the Mudbugs’ winning goal at 10:55 of OT. Rage goalie Scott Reid made 39 saves.
