Democrat Daniel Kagan will become Colorado’s newest state lawmaker after a 104-person panel tonight chose him to fill the shoes of departing Rep. Anne McGihon.

In 2008, the father of three helped fight for delegates’ right to cast their ballots for Hillary Rodham Clinton at the Democratic National Convention.

He was the only candidate among the field of nine who had officially put his name into the ring for the 2010 election for the seat.

In total, Kagan received 35 votes, squeaking past blogger and legislative aide Aaron Silverstein, who got 28.

Kagan did not immediately return a call for comment.

Candidates entering the race knew that whoever received the nomination would likely serve a full eight years in the safe Democratic seat that encompasses parts of Denver and Arapahoe counties.

Kagan enters the legislature Monday amid an $800 million budget crisis.

McGihon’s last day is Friday. She announced her resignation earlier this month, following news that she would rejoin her former law firm.
