THORNTON — A homeless couple living in a tent is now facing a much more dire situation.
The two were badly burned when an ember from a cooking pot ignited dry branches and leaves around their tent.
“The way I had our structure built, it was highly camouflaged because in this world, people don’t accept people who don’t have a home,” Travis Johnson said.
Johnson and his wife of 15 years have been at the University of Colorado Hospital burn center for about a month after their tent and nearly everything they own burned.
Johnson had to have skin grafts, and his wife has many more surgeries ahead of her. The Red Cross will assist Johnson with food and clothing and hopes to help him get counseling.
