The Latin American Research and Service Agency received a $75,000 grant to educate Latinos about applying for food assistance — something the agency hopes will expedite the process for residents across the metro area.

The federal money will help potential Latino applicants with documentation and other federal requirements to apply for food stamps.

Several metro-area counties are besieged with food-stamp applicants and are backlogged beyond 30 days, which is a violation of federal law.

Statewide, 18 percent of food- stamp applications took longer than 30 days to process in February.
