Redshirt freshman quarterback Alex Kelly, who had not practiced since the first day of spring drills, has left Colorado State to concentrate on baseball.
Kelly, third on the depth chart, played outfield for Rocky Mountain High School’s state powerhouse teams. Kelly did not reveal his plans.
“It’s obviously disappointing, because we had high hopes for him,” CSU coach Steve Fairchild said.
The departure leaves CSU with two healthy quarterbacks, senior Grant Stucker and junior college transfer Jon Eastman, for the remainder of spring ball. Fairchild said half-jokingly after Saturday’s practice he wished he had a third quarterback for when he wants to sit the other two.
The Rams bring in freshman Nico Ranieri and expect to have Klay Kubiak back from surgery. Also, reserve wide receiver T.J. Borcky was initially recruited as a quarterback. Natalie Meisler, The Denver Post
Alvarado on Pacquiao-Hatton undercard.
Denver junior welterweight Mike Alvarado will fight Juaquin Gallardo of Oakland, Calif., on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton bout May 2 in Las Vegas.
The undefeated Alvarado (25-0, 18 KOs), the world’s No. 14-ranked boxer by the IBF, has won eight of his past nine fights by knockout. In a March 7 fight in Commerce City, he knocked out New York’s Emmanuel Clottey with two seconds remaining.
Alvarado’s bout against Gallardo (18-7-1, five KOs) will be a delayed matchup of sorts. The two were originally scheduled for March 7, but Gallardo was forced to exit after dropping a bowling ball on his foot.

Colorado Springs moves ahead with USOC plans.
The Colorado Springs City Council will move forward with its $53 million deal with LandCo Equity Partners to build a new headquarters for the U.S. Olympic Committee despite a lawsuit filed last week by the developer.
The council held a closed-door meeting Monday to discuss the suit and other legal and financial problems with the project. Councilwoman Jan Martin said afterward that the city plans to “just keep moving forward on the deal we have.”
LandCo filed suit against the city and the USOC on Friday in federal court in Denver. It alleges the city and committee have failed to uphold their ends of the deal, putting LandCo and chairman Ray Marshall in financial jeopardy. The suit seeks unspecified damages and asks the court to force the city and the USOC to comply with the agreement’s terms.
