Server, Root Down
He wears: Root Down mechanic’s shirt over white long-underwear top; chocolate brown one-pocket waist apron and Guess jeans; Kenneth Cole belt and driving shoes. Sometimes a hat.
He carries: Note pad and pens.
Q: What do you think about your outfit?
A: We wear jeans and a mechanic’s shirt. I’m completely in love with it. I used to work for Macaroni Grill. I’ve worn bistro aprons to the floor and full whites. That’s stuffy and easy to stain. With mechanic’s shirts and jeans, we don’t have to worry about staining.
Q: A lot of restaurants work really hard to get their server’s jeans to look right: dark wash, no fray, no bling, no sag. Does Root Down have any rules like this?
A: No, I can wear whatever I want. Guess, Diesel. The Guess Outlet jeans fit me really well. Sometimes I wear hats, bandannas. We can wear long sleeve undershirts; it adds to the garage look.
Q: Do they veto anything?
A: It’s not a free-for-all. Our shoes have to be dark and our sleeves have to be white or gray.
Q: Speaking of shoes, what do you wear?
A: I wear some really comfortable, black European driving shoes from Kenneth Cole.
Q: Would you ever wear it outside of work?
A: We have the Root Down patch, so generally we don’t take anything outside of work, but if it were any other kind of mechanic’s shirt, I would totally wear it.
Q: Do you have other mechanic’s shirts in your closet?
A: I have three.
