The union representing Denver sheriff’s deputies has failed to convince a judge to block the firing of 11 deputies by Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper.

Denver District Court Judge Robert McGahey today rejected the union’s request for a preliminary injunction that would halt the firing of the deputies. He concluded the union’s effort would not have a reasonable likelihood of success if the case went to trial.

The mayor terminated the deputies from their positions in March after the union rejected his request that it ask the membership to accept a 2 percent reduction in the negotiated contract this year.

The mayor asked for the concessions as part of a package of more than 100 other cuts. He said he made the request to help close a projected $56 million budget gap.
