DENVER—A judge has rejected a union’s request to block the firing of 11 sheriff’s deputies by Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper.

Denver District Judge Robert McGahey on Tuesday denied the request for a preliminary injunction from the union representing Denver deputies. He determined the union’s effort wouldn’t have a reasonable likelihood of success if the case went to trial.

The mayor fired the deputies in March after the union rejected his request that it ask its membership to accept a 2 percent reduction in the negotiated contract this year.

Hickenlooper asked for the concessions as part of a package of more than 100 other cuts. He said he made the request to help close a projected $56 million budget gap.
