John Zabala’s three-round decision over Nathaniel Hicks in the 152-pound division netted him a Colorado Golden Gloves boxing championship and top honors in the open division Sunday at Mile High Event Center in Commerce City.
Arvada’s Zabala, who fights for the Backyards Brawlers club, won by points over Hicks, of the World Class Athlete Program. He was named “outstanding open class boxer.” Zabala is the defending National Junior Golden Gloves champion in the 16-year-old division.
Cassandra Mendoza, of the Rodarte club, defeated Thornton’s Raquel Jimenez at 106 pounds for a senior female championship. Mendoza was named “outstanding female boxer.”
