COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Police say a Colorado Springs man accused of beating his 60-year-old mother to death told them he was hearing voices.
Christopher Benjamin Weiler (WHEELER), 20, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder in the death of Florence Mina Miller-Weiler, a former middle school science teacher.
Authorities said she was beaten to death Monday with a guitar. Her body was discovered by her sister, Nancy Kim Arnn, who shared a home with Miller-Weiler and Weiler.
Authorities said a bloody guitar belonging to Weiler was leaning against the chair that Miller-Weiler’s body was in.
Police say when they contacted the son by phone before his arrest, he told them he needed to go to the hospital because he was hearing voices. He was taken into custody early Tuesday near a relative’s home in Denver.
An arrest warrant affidavit says Arnn told investigators Weiler has been treated for mental illness and is taking schizophrenia medication.
Weiler’s attorney, Mike McHenry, declined to comment Thursday.
