Liberty Global Inc. chief executive Michael Fries said mergers and acquisitions in the cable-systems industry are likely to remain at a standstill for the next 12 to 18 months.

“Multiples are off, sellers are panicked and credit’s not that easy to get a handhold of,” Fries said Thursday in an interview at the Cable Show in Washington.

Liberty Global, the Douglas County-based international cable company controlled by billionaire John Malone, is always on the lookout for opportunistic deals, Fries said.
