GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Three stretches of the Colorado River are among 20 river and stream segments in western Colorado singled out as eligible for federal protection.

The Grand Junction office the U.S. Bureau of Land Management announced waterways eligible for wild and scenic river designation. That’s the first step in determining whether the sites should be preserved in their free-flowing states.

The next step is a study to gather comment and consider potential conflicts that could keep the BLM from recommending that Congress grant the designation.

The BLM determined 20 sites out of 117 were eligible. Other western Colorado waterways with eligible segments include the Dolores River, the Little Dolores River and the Blue, Roan and North Fork West creeks.
